Choosing A Location For
Your Container Garden

S
electing a suitable place for your outdoor container garden is an important consideration. If you pick the wrong location, it could spell disaster for your plants. The correct location is one in which the plants get just the right amount of sunlight, are protected from harm, and is easily accessible for care and maintenance.

The most critical part of picking a place for your container garden is choosing one where the amount of sun is right for your plants. This could mean placing part of your garden in one area of your yard, and others in another area.

If you have a lot of plants that need more sunlight, and others that need more shade, you’ll either have to separate your garden into two areas, or you’ll have to provide shade to those plants that require it.

This can be pretty easy for a container garden. If you just have a couple of plants that need shade, you can set up some kind of shade system. By using a tarp or other shade system, you can create a frame over your plants that blocks sunlight for the majority of the day, based on on how much shade the plants require. This way, you can put your shade-loving plants along side your sun-loving plants.

Next, you'll need to make sure to keep your plants away from the vehicle traffic, if possible. Pollution from cars could harm your plants. Vehicles can also stir up dust that can settle on your plants, and their tires can sometimes throw rocks and other debris that may harm your plants or break containers.

You should also attempt to keep your container garden as near to your home as possible. There are several reasons why you'll want to do this. First of all, you need accessibility to your container garden so that you can take care of it. If you place your garden too far away from your home, you may be less likely to take care of it.

Also, the closer to your home your garden is placed, the less likely it is that it will be damaged by unwanted critters. Gophers, rabbits, deer, and other garden pests don’t like to get too close to the scent of humans. If you keep your container garden closer to your house, the animals will be able to smell your scent better and may be more hesitant to approach your plants.

Another good reason for placing your container garden near your house is in case you need to move your containers inside to protect them from unexpected bad weather. If the containers are closer to your home, they’ll be easier to move.

If you've had a container garden in a specific location in the last few years, and it had severe infestation from insects, you may consider locating your garden in another part of your yard. Sometimes insects will come back the following year to a previous location in search of the same food they had the previous year. If you relocate your container garden, there's a small chance that these insects won't find your garden this year.

If you’re growing large plants like corn, selecting the correct location from the beginning is critical. These larger plants might be too awkward or too heavy to move without damaging them, so they have to be put int the right place from the start. Pre-planning can avoid any location problems down the road, so plan your garden carefully.
